The 4th An Yu and Tan and Tan Lawyers Family Tournament

Results of the 4th Annual An Yu and Tan and Tan Lawyers Family Tournament

It was such a great and fun Saturday. The Family Tournament is at it's 4th year and it is just as popular as the first year when Yuli and I thought about a tournament where the parents and kids can play as a team for family bonding.

Of course, the problem was seeing how the new and young players could get a good game and not be upset at being smashed by better players like the parents.

So the rule was made that the parents or parents for hire cannot smash the young players. All the parents can do is to return the shuttle to the other side and give the young players a chance to hone their skills.

I must say many of the young players have improved so much from Yuli's coaching.

I am told, many of the young under 11s are very determined to improve. Great for the players , Yuli and WA's future state teams.

I can see how Sarah Wang can now do a powerful smash while partnering my son Tyzton who adores her.

This was the the Under 11s.

In the under 15s, you can see that the players who have been training with Yuli for a few years have much better skills. With parents who are quite strong too, there was no hesitation is smashing every one.

It was great to see how the parent and child in the under 15s played.

For the Over 15s, it was another interesting slant to the competition.

We had WA state players like, Joanne Zheng, Vevina Yang, Julian Lee, Dawson Lawrence, Jasper Tan, Jason Lee, Jackie Zheng, Bernice Teoh, Jazton Tan and Cindy Lawrence.

We also had Australian national players like Xiang Lin, Kai Chen and Tyzton Tan.

The state and national players had clear instructions as some of them were playing with their mums who do not play badminton but have supported their child trough through state and national competitions.

Xiang played with his mum Wendy as a partner against Kai Chen and his mum Emma. Both boys were so supportive of their mums, No smashing, They were even using their rackets in their non dominant arms to give the mums a chance. It was a great sight to see the Australian national level boys competing with their mums.

Of special mention was the semi finals where Sok Teoh and Bernice played against Kai Chen and Emma. It was a all Teoh affair. Sok Teoh was reminded that if he won, he would have no dinner from his wife that night. He gracefully lost to his wife so that Kai Chen and Emma could play against Jason Lee and his dad in the finals.

The finals in the Over 15s became a 3 setter as the Lees were fair and generous in not smashing Emma. At some stage, Emma just has to stand in a corner while KC was running all over the court.
KC ran out of steam and the Lees won the gold trophy at their 2nd attempt after losing to Tyz and I, 2 years ago. Good on the Lees. They were so fair in not smashing Emma.

So the eventual winners are:

Under 11s

Bronze: Angel and Hayden
Silver: Tyzton Tan and Sarah Wong
Gold : Jazton Tan and Zhi Ron Tan.

Under 15s:

Bronze: Robin Fu and HaiTao Zheng
Silver: Vevina and Gary Yang
Gold: llias and Timothy Sentosa

Over 15s:

Bronze: Bernice and Sok Teoh
Silver: Kai Chen and Emma Teoh
Gold: Jason and Chin Wee Lee.

That was a great weekend. Till the 5th year, see you.
